Presenting and Listening

Today in West Civ class we presented our presentation powerpoints we had been working on! My group was up first since we talked about the parents and we did a solid job. Our group talked about the parents, Olympia (the mother), King Phillip 2 (father), and Zeus (godly father). I know enough about this subject since my group presented it so I will go onto other notes.
Notes:

  • King Phillip loved body guard and he got jealous and was killed by him
  • Persians paid body guard a lot of money to kill the king
  • Olympias and Alexander planned the killing of the king because they did not like him because he was thinking of not giving Alexander the throne
  • Alexander took over in 334 BC at age of 20
  • His first act was to execute all who had a threat to his seat on the throne
                                                        Education

  • He was first taught by Leonidus
  • Tried teaching Alexander horsemanship, archery, and skills valuable to life
  • Hr would not listen because he was being a brat
  • Then his father hired Aristotle
  • He was taught politics, drama. poetry, science, and poetry
  • Illiad was his favorite book and he took it with him every single place he went, wars and all
  • Bucephellus was a horse no one could tame, but humungous so he tamed him by himself at age 13
  • Horse name meant ox head, it is said it had a big head or a birth mark on its side

Chapter 5

Hellenistic: refers to the international period of Greek history, when much of the Mediterranean and southwestern Asia was under Greek rule. Internationally connected and impacted by Greek Rule. Alexander takes over at 20 doesn't lose any battle he is involved in.
In 359 B.C. King Philip the 2 of Macedonia comes to power of Macedonia and then he will try and gain control of Greece.
The Athenians lost the Peloponesian war because they got to into themselves and power. They were not content in which what they already had and the flourishing lives they were living, and Sparta was not even going to attack Athens to reign as the undoubted ruler of Greece. The Athenians sticked to their sound strategy at first and it was going well, but they had plague reign over them and they could not conquer that, also their leader, Pericles died of this plague and without him there were people struggling to try and gain control of Athens and be the leader, but it was unnsuccessful. They finally just had to give up because they already had lost 1/3 or 2/3 of their population do to disease and such which lead to their end. The Spartans were just not even compared to on land battle, while the thought was right they failed to realize that Sparta did not have to go to the sea for supplies and got it all on land and were perfectly fine without the sea.

Movie Cont.

Today in class we were moving on in the movie and we skipped 40 min of the movie because Mr. Schick said he could explain it in around 5 minutes, which he held true to himself. He described to us that the Spartans won the Peloponnese war. The Athenian leaders were Hubris( too high into yourself as a leader and think you are unconquerable). The plague killed 1/3 of the population that resided in Athens which is really shocking. Then they sent Socrates to death because of him apparently underminning state religion and currupting the youth of Athens, while he was just trying to help Athens out and do his job towards Athens. He said that an unexamined life is not worth living. The jury that conducted the trial was around 500 people, but there was only 30 votes separating the verdict and they made him drink hemlock.

Test back :(

Today we got our tests back and I was not pleased at all, this was my worst grade I have gotten on a History class course my ENTIRE freshman year. I got an 86 and first time I did not get a ding I was very annoyed because I like studying for my tests not having an open book ones in history because most of the questions are stuff we go over in class and that is what I excel on, however if this was bio or another class I would differ my choices, but I feel like I totally sick in what Mr. Schick says and it really shows in my grades, history was not always such a strong subject for me, but so far this year it is! I still love the class and all, but this 86 is heart breaking news!

PERSIA DEFEATED

Today in West Civ. class we got the long class which was cut short by a few minutes since it was an extended advisory bell. The day did not seem as long as others however maybe it was because the movie got more interesting who knows, but I enjoyed it. We learned about why the Marathon was as long as it is and how it originated and also that a man ran 140 miles to get the message to Sparta, but the Spartans rejected him saying too bad we do not care and we will protect ourselves if we need to. Also we learned on how the fierce Athenians held back and defeated the Great Persian Empire which was very vast too. We learned that this did not just happen once, but it happened twice! The Persians had been outsmarted and defeated, but the man that led the Athenians was said to have been gaining too much power so he was ostracized from the city and died in exile.

Monday: Cont. of video

In class on Monday we kept on going on about watching the video. This video is very long, but is interesting and keeps me intrigued in the class especially the way Mr. Schick helps bring it alive more! Also I believe that learning about Ancient Greece is one of the most interesting subjects in social studies, besides the fact that we do not know if half of the stuff that we are being told is true, or they have over exaggerated it. Also it is annoying how hard some of these guys names are to spell so I try to avoid saying or spelling them. We learned on how a man had gotten to reign from a guy who was born out to be a leader and was choosing his attack time, however there was a man of similarity in which he was brought up to lead Athens, but realized he could not do it alone so he decided to go to their arch rival, Sparta for the help of their "astonishing" army to help conquer the thrown for himself and Sparta.
